3 Ways To Perfect Your Passing In Football Lessons

24th September 2024

Here are 3 ways to perfect your passing in football lessons. Whether your child is just starting their football journey or looking to fine-tune their skills, mastering the art of passing is key to becoming a more confident player. At Kixx, we focus on ensuring that every child has a strong foundation in the basics, making learning both fun and educational.

Here are 3 effective ways to improve passing skills, designed for children at every stage of their football development.

The Importance Of Perfected Footwork

Footwork is a crucial aspect of football—it’s what allows players to control the ball and execute accurate passes. At Kixx, we teach children how to master foot positioning, which is fundamental to all aspects of the game, including dribbling, passing, and shooting.

For young footballers, learning how to move confidently with the ball is essential. We guide our players through drills that enhance their coordination and balance, helping them grow into well-rounded athletes. Our sessions are designed for children from as young as 18 months, ensuring that even the youngest participants can take their first steps into football in a safe and encouraging environment.

At Kixx, we provide football lessons for children aged 18 months to 10 years. Some of the children that join us have never played football before. And some children are in the early stages of learning to walk. So, we take it slow, focus on nailing the basics, and most importantly, have fun with it!

3 Ways To Perfect Your Passing In Football Lessons

1. Mastering The Basics

Every great pass starts with the fundamentals. Passing with accuracy requires proper foot placement and posture. Here at Kixx, we emphasise how important it is to keep a strong stance and ensure children understand how to position their bodies correctly.

Body Position: The direction you want the ball to travel should align with your body’s orientation. We teach children to adjust their body position to increase the accuracy of their passes.

Inside Foot Passing: For beginners, the most effective passing technique is using the inside of the foot. This method offers the greatest control, allowing children to pass the ball with precision. By locking the ankle and keeping the toes up, young players can create stable and consistent passes.

    2. Vision & Awareness

Vision and awareness are essential when it comes to passing like a pro. The more you harness this skill, the better you will become at navigating a ball around the field, predicting your teammate’s movements, and outmanoeuvring the opposition.

At Kixx, we teach football to some infants who are still coming to grips with spatial awareness and direction. So, we don’t expect this skill to come overnight.

There are a few important, basic steps to developing this essential skill in passing.

      • Keep Your Head Up

Looking ahead and being aware of the positions of teammates and opponents is vital to making a successful pass. We guide children through exercises that promote head-up play, teaching them to read the game and make quick decisions.

      • Decision Making

When it comes to passing, confidence is key. Hesitation might lead to the ball being intercepted by the opposition.

A well-timed pass can change the flow of the game, so we teach children to trust their instincts while also recognising the value of teamwork. Kixx coaches create a supportive environment where children feel confident in their choices, learning that sometimes taking a chance is the best play.

      • Positional Awareness

Again, this is a skill that takes time to develop. Understanding positional awareness comes with knowing the player’ positions and their roles. We wouldn’t focus too heavily on this until further down the line in football lessons for children.

Knowing where players are or should be, on the pitch, be that your teammates or opponents, will help you make effective passes. This also feeds into predicting your teammate’s movements.

      3. Teamwork

Passing is inherently a team skill. It’s about moving the ball efficiently between teammates to create opportunities. At Kixx, we use fun drills that promote teamwork and collaboration.

        • One-Two Passing

One of the simplest and most effective passing drills is the one-two pass. This involves two players passing the ball back and forth while moving up the pitch. This drill not only improves passing accuracy but also builds strong relationships between players, as it fosters communication and coordination.

In one-two passing, player 1 passes to player 2, player 1 then runs past player 2, and then player 2 passes to player 1. This is a good simulation of what it is like to move up the field by passing.

        • Communication

Football is a team sport that requires constant communication. Players need to let their teammates know when they’re in space or when a pass is coming their way.

At Kixx, there are many ways in which we support children with building social skills, including improving their communication. We create a friendly, safe, and fun environment, which encourages children to feel confident when interacting with others.
