Football seasons aren’t the same across the globe – varying in time and length. The ‘season’ refers to the period of time within the year that football games are in session regularly whether it be cup competitions or tournaments. Although the English Premier League and other English leagues have a similar season time, other footballing associations, especially children’s football academies, may not stick to the football season structure. This blog aims to explore children’s football seasons – when do they start and end?
Football Seasons
Generally speaking, the footballing season is usually split up into three sections: preseason, regular season and offseason.
Preseason – This is the period that players are expected to be at their club for training. We can usually expect to see ‘friendly’ games during the preseason which allow players to practice tactics and new formations as well as improve their fitness and stamina before the regular season commences.
Regular season – many may still refer to this as the ‘home and away’ season which shows us exactly that! During this section of the season, the main competition and ‘points-based league’ is in action. We as fans and spectators are most familiar with this section of the season.
Competing teams play a set number of games against their opponents – usually following the format of one game in their home ground and one game in the away venue. The points are then accumulated throughout the competition, leading to the winner’s announcement at the season’s end.
Offseason – This refers to the time that ‘regular’ games aren’t in action, but that’s not to say no games are played! During this section, top league teams usually participate in a ‘playoff’ to decipher which team is promoted.
The Footballing Calendar
The season is usually between August and May for the Premier League and other Footballing leagues in England.
National football games, especially in England are planned around international competitions. This is where we see the likes of Harry Kane and Jack Grealish leaving their clubs temporarily to compete for England!
As a general rule, the footballing calendar is dictated highly by the weather. Although now, we see more and more stadiums with draining and heating systems in place to improve pitch quality, strictly speaking, the weather is the largest factor in the happenings of football games.
Children’s Football Seasons
More often than not, children’s football academies don’t necessarily follow the same seasonal pattern as professional football clubs. Children don’t have the time that professional footballers have of course, due to other important commitments – like school!
Many academies might follow a term time pattern, only offer holiday clubs or offer classes on a weekend.
Children’s Football Season At Kixx
At Kixx, we offer our own season! Our academy classes take place year-round! Our coaches and students, train every week for 8 weeks with the Kixx Curriculum carefully crafted by professional footballers and trained coaches who use the best games, drills, exercises and materials for working with this age group.
The Kixx season’s structure is 8 weekly sessions followed by a rest week on the 9th week (think of this as our off season!) We follow this sequence all year round.
With that being said, however, we do usually offer a two-week rest break over the Christmas period, due to venue availability and our appreciation of the importance of family time over the festive period.
