Introducing girls to football from a young age is the first step to exploring the road to women’s football. Since the recent successes of the Lionesses, people across the globe have been witness to the success and triumph of women in football, urging more children to get involved with the sport.
At Kixx we welcome girls of all ages to our football lessons and if you know a young girl that is interested in getting into football, this is the blog for you! Here, in this Kixx blog post, we aim to explore the road to women’s football – its advancements throughout history and how getting young girls into the sport can lead to great success.
The History Of Women’s Football
Although the success of women’s football is something to document over the last few generations, much to many people’s surprise, female football games date back to 1881. Women’s football gained momentum throughout the late 1800s with local teams across the UK competing in tournaments. This resulted in the British Ladies Football Club being formed in 1895 with over 10,000 fans spectating the first North vs South of the London Thames match.
Football was one of the key supporting movements of the women’s rights campaign, consistently encouraging girls and women to get involved with the sport. This was further supported in World War One when women took what were typically male jobs, in the factory where sports and fitness were encouraged to improve their health and wellbeing.
Despite the growing popularity of football for women and girls – On 5 December 1921, a ban on the women’s game was announced, stopping football from being played at the professional grounds and pitches of clubs affiliated with The FA.
Thankfully, as society changed, so did the concept surrounding women playing football and in the 1970s, the FA finally reverted their ban on the game for girls and women across the country.
FIFA introduced the women’s World Cup competition in 1991 and women’s football started to grow globally. Since then, we have seen women’s football come on leaps and bounds, seeing huge successes in football competitions played by females, up to the present day. It goes without saying that here at Kixx we are unbelievably proud of our Lionesses and the advancements we have seen in women’s football in our country.
Encouraging and helping girls get into football from a young age, is one of the key ways in which we can ensure the continuation of women’s football.
Introducing Girls To Women’s Football
There are young children across the globe that idolise football stars such as Jill Scott, Leah Williamson and our England female coach Sarina Weigman. There are so many ways in which parents can encourage their young footballing fanatics to get involved with football and make their mark on the ever evolving path of women’s football.
Thankfully, we find ourselves in a generation where women and sports are so intertwined, it is easier than ever for young girls to access football.
Whether you watch women’s football on the TV, go to football matches or enrol your child into a football academy, introducing girls to women’s football has never been easier and can host a whole variety of benefits for their development and their relationship with the sport.
Encouraging an active lifestyle, in a fun way is one of the key benefits of introducing girls to women’s football. It can sometimes be difficult if girls aren’t introduced to sports, for them to find a fun way to stay active and understand more about the importance of physical health. At a football academy for kids, girls will learn basic skills of football in a fun environment, making new friends and keeping active!
At Kixx, we have lots of girls attending our football lessons. Football academies are a great way for young girls to make friends with other girls and boys who are interested and passionate about football. This improves their social and communication skills.
